A survivorship bias lesson from the mathematician Abraham Wald inspired one the strategies I like to use.
During WWII the Hungarian army was reinforcing areas of aircraft that were more heavily riddled with bullet holes.
Wald pointed out that this approach was flawed due to survivorship bias. The planes with bullet holes in those areas are the ones that made it home. The planes that were hit in other areas likely didn't return.
We can apply this to blood & urine analysis of mycotoxins. One of those labs show us what the body is able to purge, and sometimes the toxicity is caused by an inability to purge specific mycotoxins. Based on growth substrates and growth conditions we can infer which toxins may be building up due to over exposure. If we don't have a doctors lab results to worth with I can use the spore trap analysis with a clever mix inductive and deductive reasoning.
Recent Example: If we find that you previously had elevated Cladosporium levels, Inductive reasoning would guide me to consider structural wood in the crawl space, the furnace ducts, and insulation in the exterior wall cavities. Deductive reasoning would be saying "1 this home has a slab foundation so there is no crawl space, 2 I do see some visible growth in the ducts because all homes with duct systems in the slab grow mold inside of them, and 3 the underground ducts explain some level of Clado but do not explain why it has declined sharply. It's most probable that there was water intrusion from the outside passing through the inner wall cavity insulation because the porous insulation trapped between two walls will retain water much longer than something with more air exposure. That would allow a lot of Cladosporium growth in a short amount of time.
Those types of inspection reasoning are why I'm usually the LAST professional anyone needs to call.
